Hot House

Temporary Site-Specific Installation:
Designed for the Des Moines Art Center, Iowa Artists Exhibition

Curated by Amy Worthen

Translucent adhesive vinyl on skywalk glass.

2008

This installation re-imagined a public glassed-in sidewalk in downtown Des Moines as a hothouse for incubating seedlings.

The project began in February of 2008 when nearly extinct Tom Thumb sweet pea heirloom plants were forced in the Grinnell College Greenhouse. Saved by Seed Savers Exchange in Decorah, IA — one of the largest repositories of native seeds in the world — the tiny Tom Thumb shoots were then projected and traced by hand. The windows held shadows of these rare plants as the spring came to downtown Des Moines.
