The botanical specimen that inspired this project is a Western Prairie Fringed Orchid collected in 1886, the same year the Iowa State Capitol was built. These extremely rare prairie orchids were once common in the Midwest. Now they are found in only three counties in Iowa and are on the federally endangered species list.
