Performative collaboration with Barry Phipps

This project is an exploration of place. Barry Phipps is a photographer with a deep understanding of the magic realism of the Iowa Landscape.

The wildest spaces I have found in Iowa are family farmsteads that have been turned back to nature preserves. Even after many years, the evidence of man’s hand on the landscape is apparent; but there is also an incredible wildness.

A hike near Interstate-80 reveals a windmill overlooking a marshland; underneath it lies a cast iron bathtub.  I made a white butcher apron and carried roadkill bones out into the landscape where Barry and I built a series of images that I feel illuminate this project and speak to its mystery.
